Speech Language Pathologist Jobs FAQs

How do I apply for a school-based SLP position with Aya Education?

Register with Aya Education and upload a current resume to begin applying to school-based SLP jobs. Once you’re registered, you can search for school SLP jobs in your Aya account to view job details, including pay. When you find a job you like, click “Start Application” and submit a few details to alert a recruiter that you’re interested. If your experience is a match, a recruiter will reach out to guide you through the rest of the application process and facilitate communication with the district.

What types of school SLP positions can I find through Aya Education?

Aya Education offers travel and local school SLP jobs nationwide. Whether you want to explore a new city or work close to home, we have jobs for you to make an impact wherever you want to go. Most of the jobs available in your Aya account can be taken as a travel or local contract. Your recruiter can provide details on local rates. For SLPs interested in travel, Aya makes it even easier by covering licensing costs in California and Washington. Your recruiter will help you find openings in your desired areas, or you can log in to your Aya account and search for jobs by location.

No matter what type of role you’re looking for, we have options, and your recruiter will help you find the perfect fit for your needs.

Do I need to have an active SLP license before I start working through Aya Education?

License requirements vary by state and district. Typically, an active state SLP license is needed to apply, but in some cases, a pending license may be accepted with proof of your application. Your recruiter and assigned credentialing specialist will go over the specific requirements for the jobs you’re interested in. Our credentialing team will guide you through the licensing process, and for SLPs applying in California or Washington, Aya will even cover the costs of your license, if eligible.

Do I need prior school experience to work as a school SLP, or can new graduates (CFYs) apply?

While prior school experience is a plus, it’s not always required to land a school-based SLP job. Many school districts accept candidates with clinical backgrounds and new grads just starting their careers. Select districts may even offer opportunities for SLPs in their Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY). If you don’t have school experience when you apply, you can include relevant pediatric or clinical experience on your resume and highlight your transferable skills. Whether you’re an experienced SLP or a recent graduate, Aya offers a wide variety of opportunities, and your recruiter will help you find the roles that best match your skillset.

What support will Aya Education provide during my job search and placement as an SLP?

Working with Aya Education means having an entire support team backing you throughout your career. Take a look at some of the resources and support we provide:

  • Recruitment: Your recruiter is your career guru. They’ll listen to your goals and find SLP jobs that fit your needs. Whether it’s assisting with your job search, communicating with hiring managers or advocating on your behalf, they’re by your side the whole way.
  • Credentialing: This team keeps you organized and on track with compliance requirements. They’ll handle all your paperwork and keep you updated on missing or expiring documents, making sure you’re ready to start on time.
  • Payroll: Aya’s payroll team ensures you’re paid accurately and on time every week. They’re also available to answer any questions related to pay.
  • Experience: This team helps with onboarding at your new school and provides exceptional support while you’re on assignment. They’ll troubleshoot any issues and make your happiness their priority.
  • Benefits: We know how much you give to your students and want to make sure you have the support and resources to thrive. Aya offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k) options, accrued sick time and more.

How long are the contracts for school SLP jobs through Aya Education?

Aya Education contracts typically span the entire academic school year or start mid-year and last through the end of the school year. Short-term contracts may be available for reasons such as a leave of absence. Contract length will depend on the time of year you apply and the district’s needs. Your recruiter will go over all your options and confirm the required assignment length before you apply.

What happens after my school SLP contract ends?

When your contract ends, you have three main paths you can take for your next career move:

  • Extend your current contract: If you like your school and they have a continuing need, you can choose to extend your contact and stay in the same role for the next school year.
  • Take a permanent position: If you’re ready to put down roots and your school has an opening for a permanent role, Aya offers a contract-to-permanent option for you to join them as an employee of the district.
  • Switch to a new school: If you’re ready to embark on a new adventure, your recruiter will assist you in securing an assignment at another school.

As your contract wraps up, your recruiter will check in to see what you want to do next. No matter what choice you make, they’ll make your transition as seamless as possible.

Will I have to interview with the school district for a school SLP job, and what is the interview process like?

Yes, once your recruiter submits you for a school SLP job, the district will request to schedule a virtual interview with you. Before the interview, your recruiter will send you an interview prep sheet and make sure you feel confident and know what to expect. During the interview, you should be prepared to answer questions about:

  • Your previous experience: Districts will want to know how you adapt to students with different backgrounds and abilities. You can highlight your experience with students with diverse needs or varying grade levels. If this is your first time working in a school, you can focus on your clinical background and any pediatric experience you have. New graduates can highlight their fellowship experience, relevant courses and any transferable skills. It’s a good idea to prepare a few specific examples that highlight your skillset.
  • Your approach: Be ready to answer questions about your approach to therapy and assessment for students, including how you tailor your treatment plans to students with varying needs. Districts may want to hear how you collaborate with others, as interdisciplinary teamwork with teachers, other therapists, parents and school administrators is important to student success.
  • Your motivation and career goals: Schools like to know that you’re passionate about helping students. You may be asked questions about why you want to work a school SLP job, to gauge your passion for helping students communicate and learn.

Remember that the interview is a time for both you and the school to see if the job is a good fit. Work with your recruiter to prepare a few questions to ask during the interview to get clarity on caseload demands, support and resources, and the school’s culture.
